About autogenous cutting

Autogenous cutting starts with a mixture of oxygen and propane. This is used to heat the metal to the ignition temperature, which for steel is around 1100 degrees Celsius. A jet of oxygen is then directed at the heated spot and this causes a strong reaction between the metal and the oxygen, resulting in the formation of an oxide or slag. The oxygen jet blows away the slag, enabling the jet to cut through the material.
